‘Morrow Road’ screening, book sale, more set in Macomb, St. Clair counties – The Voice

Local libraries are offering events and programs for all ages. Here’s a look at what’s planned.

MACOMB COUNTY

Armada Free Public Library

• The Armada Genealogy Society meets at 10 a.m. Feb. 15. The meetings are open to anyone interested in researching their family genealogy and/or helping to collect/preserve genealogical and historical data for the Armada area.

• The library board meets at 4 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Community Room.

• Gaming Club meets from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb.  15 and 22. Teens and tweens grades six to 12 are welcome to join. Have fun playing video games on the library’s Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Wii.

• Story Time, designed for the youngest pre-K readers, runs from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 16 and 23.

• Blizzard of Books, a weekly reading challenge for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, runs through Feb. 25.

Chesterfield Township Library

The library will be closed on Feb. 20 for the Presidents’ Day holiday.

• The library board of trustees will meet on Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome.

• The Nonfiction Book Discussion Group will meet on Feb. 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Join the discussion and share observations, praise and criticism of biographies and books on culture, current events, politics and history. New members are always welcome. The book selection is, “Accidental Presidents: Eight Men who Changed America,” by Jared Cohen.

• A used book sale hosted by the Friends of the Library will take place on Feb. 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Feb. 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Friends of the Chesterfield Township Library, organized in 2001, is an independent 501 c3 nonprofit organization, a volunteer group dedicated to strengthening and improving library services for the community. The Friends invest advocacy and education, contributions, fundraising efforts, gift administration and volunteer efforts in the library.

• Tech Help will be provided on Feb. 17 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Learn how to download audiobooks on a phone, eBooks on a tablet, use Microsoft Office and Word, Internet basics, computer basics, social media, email and more.

• Preschool/Kindergarten Drawing Class will be offered on Feb. 18 from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Children must have experience coloring. Minimum age is 3 1/2 years old. Space is limited.

• Grade 1-5 Drawing Class will be offered on Feb. 18 from 11 a.m.  to noon. Come have fun learning how to draw. Space is limited.

• Teen Art Club will meet on Feb. 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Hang out with fellow artists to share ideas while practicing figure drawing, storytelling and advanced techniques.

• Yarn Tales Knitting and Crochet Group will meet on Feb. 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Come and meet new people and work on projects. Participants are asked to bring their own yarn and hook or needles.

• The Friends of the Library will meet on Feb. 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Adults seeking volunteer opportunities at their public library are encouraged to join.

• Finding your Family Roots is set for Feb. 22 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Learn more about the resources and tools available to help explore family history with the library’s in-house genealogist.

• Game Night for Adults will take place Feb. 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The library will provide board games, but participants are welcome to bring their own.

• Teen Advisory Board will meet on Feb. 25 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. TAB is a group of teens in grades six to 12 who live or go to school in Chesterfield Township and who participate in and influence the functioning of the library, especially for teen programming and library materials. TAB is a forum to have opinions and suggestions heard, as well as an opportunity to complete additional volunteer and community service hours.

• Books and Babies will run from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays through March 1. Children ages 6 months to 24 months old with their caregivers can enjoy lapsit songs, interactive baby rhymes and simple storybooks, followed by playtime with toys.

• Play Group will be offered on Wednesdays through March 1 at 10:30 a.m. Books and Babies attendees are invited to play together after story time.

• Read to Echo or Olive on Wednesdays through May 31 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Children who have a hard time reading can gain confidence in their skills by reading to a trained therapy dog.

• Toddler Time will take place on Mondays through Feb. 27 and Thursdays through March 2 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Toddlers with a favorite adult can enjoy interactive stories, songs and games that encourage their emerging language skills.

• On Tuesdays through April 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program: Tax Preparation and Filing Services, will be available at the library. Macomb County Veterans Services has partnered with Macomb Community Action and the Accounting Aid Society to offer free tax help for local veterans and low-income individuals and families. Jean Waterloo Lenox Township Library

• The library board meets at 6 p.m. Feb. 16.

• Movie Night runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 20. The program is geared toward children up to age 10 but all children and families are welcome.

• Teen Night runs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 21. Students in grades six to 12 are invited to stop by the library for crafts, snacks and more. This month, the group will be making yarn bracelets.

• Crochet Meetup is set to run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 22. Crochet enthusiasts of all skill levels are welcome to attend. The library will provide the crochet tools necessary, but participants are also welcome to bring their own or an ongoing project to work on.

• A STEM Program for children ages 6 to 10 runs from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 25. Registration is required due to limited space and supplies.

• Preschool Storytime for ages 3 to 5 runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 16 and 23.

• Lapsit Plus for ages 16 months to 36 months runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 21.

• Hooks & Needles, a knitting and crochet group, meets at 6 p.m. Feb. 14 and 28. All levels are welcome. Bring a project to work on.

• Richmond Readers will meet at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 16.

• American Girl Club: Marie Grace and Cecile runs from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 15. Kids will enjoy snacks, crafts and learning about Marie Grace and Cecile.

• Toddler and Preschool Storytime runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 16. Join Ms. Kelly at the library for stories, songs and fun. Registration is requested. Walk-ins will be accommodated as space allows.

• Lego Club meets from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 16. Come build with the library’s collection of Lego bricks.

• Color Me Fun for Adults runs from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 16. Registration is required to ensure enough supplies.

• February Books on Tap meets from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 16 at Blind Owl Restaurant and Bar, located at 6310 Main St., Suite F, in New Baltimore.

• Baby and Me Storytime runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 17. Visit the library for a book, songs and fun. Registration is required, but walk-ins will be accommodated where space allows.

• Family Fun: Bingo runs from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 17. Have fun playing bingo with the family. Small prizes and free books will be provided to winners.

• Family Fun: Coloring runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 18. All ages can come to the library for coloring and other crafts.

• Make-It Mondays runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 20. Join local crafters in the community room to work on projects and share expertise.

• The Friends of MacDonald Public Library meets at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 20.

• Writer’s Club meets from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20. Get together with other writers for support, discussion and time to write without the distractions of home.

• The Teen Advisory Council meets from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21. Teens can help to create teen programs, volunteer their time at the library and make new friends. Free pizza is provided.

• Books on the Bay – Book Club meets from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21. February’s book is “Violeta” by Isabel Allende.

• February Teen Knit-Chat runs from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 22. Participants will learn how to make a small octopus plush toy. No experience is necessary; newcomers will be taught how to begin the hobby. Materials are provided. The activity requires some dexterity of the hands. Registration is requested, but walk-ins are welcome.

• The library board meets at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22. An agenda for the meeting will be shared at macdonaldlibrary.org and inside the library at least 18 hours prior to this event. The meeting is open to the public.

• Storytime, featuring stories, songs or crafts with a mix of poems, puppets, finger plays and movement activities that promote literacy, runs from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 16 and 23.

• Conversation and Crafts, open to teens and adults, runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 18 and 25. Participants can pursue their own projects while learning from others who share their passions.

• Grown-Up Coloring Club meets from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21. Supplies will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own coloring books.

• The Ladies Night Out Book Club meets at 6 p.m. Feb. 22. February’s book is “The Bright Side of Disaster” by Katherine Center. March’s book is “Every Vow You Break” by Peter Swanson. Registration is recommended.

• Marshmallow Constellations runs from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 21. Children will learn about the night sky and the basic history of constellations. Participants will practice using a star wheel and build their own constellations out of marshmallows and toothpicks.

• The Third Thursday Book Club meets from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16. Refreshments will be served. Registration is required.

• Storytime features a blend of stories, rhymes and songs at 10 a.m. Feb. 17 and 24.

• Canasta will be played from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 15. The card game resembling Rummy is usually played by two pairs of partners. The goal is to collect sets, or melds, of cards. Beginners are welcome.

• Mahjong will be played from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 22.

• Dinner and a Movie runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Feb. 23. Watch “The Big Year,” starring Owen Wilson and Jack Black, with dinner provided by the Friends of the Memphis Library. Popcorn and refreshments are also served.

• A Winter Beach Party for kids is set to run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28. Attendees will play beachy games, eat beachy snacks and create a beachy craft to take home. Come dressed for the beach, including a shirt and shoes, and bring an adult. Registration is requested.

Port Huron/Main Library

• A “Morrow Road” horror movie presentation is set for 6 p.m. Feb. 22. The legend of Morrow Road is one of the oldest legends In Michigan, spanning back to the late 1800s. The story involves a ghost looking for her lost child and haunting the road to this day. Filmmaker Francis Sampier is bringing this local ghost story to the big screen soon and will give you an exclusive inside look at the library. Filmed entirely in Michigan with many local talents, the film will explore several theories surrounding the legend. The director will discuss the legend and provide updates on the movie. Registration is requested.

• A Chocolate Passport Tasting event is set to run from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 15. Participants will sample a variety of chocolates from around the world, rank their favorites and share their thoughts on each offering.

• Storytime, featuring a blend of stories, rhymes and songs for preschool children, followed by activity time with structured play to hone fine and gross motor skills, runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Feb. 15, 17, 22 and 24.

• Rhythm & Rhyme, which introduces little ones to the sounds and rhythms of language through short poems, stories and music, followed by play, runs from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 21 and 28.

• The Friends of the St. Clair County Library – Port Huron/Main will meet at 1 p.m. Feb. 17.
